Second Molar with Single Root & Single Canal

Molars have considerable anatomic with respect to number of roots & root canals. This variability in molars poses a great challenge to endodontic diagnosis & treatment planning. A thorough knowledge along with correct diagnosis & appropriate cleaning & shaping of the canal will result in successful outcome.

Case Study: A 30 years old male patient came to the clinic with the complaint of the pain in the posterior left mandibular region for the past one week with an intermittent pain for the last two months. When examined, he had a carious left mandibular second molar (37) with tenderness with percussion.

Radiographic examination of the tooth revealed unusual anatomy of conical root with a single canal. To begin with, the tooth was anesthesized & endodontic access cavity was prepared. Inspection of the pulp chamber revealed a single canal orifice in the centre of the floor of the pulp chamber. Working length was taken, the cleaning & shaping of the canal was done by step-back technique & then obturated with gutta-percha through lateral condensation technique.
